Which is more accurate and reliable: Wikipedia or Quora?

För vilka frågor är Wikipedia bäst och när är Quora bäst? Jag vill gärna tänka att tankesatt kan bli bäst inom sitt område, nämligen hur man ska komma ur sitt databeroende.

Answer by Steven Walling:

The answer to this question depends on type of knowledge you're looking for. For context, I've written more than 200 Wikipedia articles and almost 350 Quora answers, so based on my comparisons between the two:

  • Quora is more reliable and accurate for getting at the truth about subjects that are best understood based on personal experience and expertise. When I want to know what it was like to be in Auschwitz and be a subject of human experimentation, you cannot beat reading accounts by Holocaust survivor Eva Kor. This doesn't just apply to famous people either. When it comes to the details about NASA and International Space Station operations, getting the information direct from someone like NASA engineer/instructor Robert Frost is so much better than a Wikipedia article written based on dry news reports. Quora has real experts writing in so many fields relevant to our lives, from police officers to physicists. This is only going to grow over time as we fill out the diversity of the Quora Topic Network.
  • Wikipedia is better at being reliable for objective facts that can be verified with other sources. On Quora, you are encouraged to use citations and sources, but on Wikipedia it's required. As an encyclopedia, Wikipedia's process is weighted heavily toward things that can be confirmed by many published sources as fact.

We can take a relevant example and break this down. Measles is an important topic, due to the 2015 Vaccination Debate and Measles Outbreak in the United States. Quora tells me a lot about issues such as why many parents choose not to vaccinate. Even pretty scientific aspects like What makes measles so contagious? are answered thoughtfully by experts on Quora. However, when I want to know the statistics on regional infection rates, I turn to Wikipedia because it aggregates facts from many reliable sources.

I am 25 and very lazy. What should I do?

Det här verkar vara bra råd. Jag kan känna igen mig sjäv i delar av beskrivningen och jag tror mig se många av mina elever. Hoppas ni får nytta v tipsen i den här texten från Quora.

I am going to tell you one simple truth. No matter how many motivational videos you watch or self help books you read, it is not going to help you. Not one bit.

For normal people it might work, but for us it will motivate us for an hour hardly and then it all goes away and we are back to square one. Läs mer…

What is the one word that will make you rich?

2015-02-26 15.46.42Answer by Eric Lauritzen:

No.

Say no to anyone or anything that will waste your time. Say no to anyone who is negative. Say no to all the vampires who want to suck you dry and dump their shit on you. Say no to anyone who wants you to work for free. Say no to excess leisure time and instant gratification. Say no to fear.

What, programming-wise, would be most useful to learn in a few months?

Answer by Pushparaj Adigopula:

JavaScript

You don't lose anything if you don't learn .NET, Python, Java or Ruby. But without JavaScript you cannot make your mark as a programmer as web applications are expanding their scope beyond web applications. (eg. Metro apps and apps for ChromeOS etc. )

With Node.js, JavaScript has grown to accommodate a full stack from frontend to backend and even full length database systems.

You can develop a full length web application using only JavaScript:

What can I start today that will benefit me for a lifetime?

Bra om att utveckla sig själv. Mitt förslag är att du skriver på tankesatt!

Answer by Santhosh Komaraju:

Every week day the time allocation goes something like this:

  • 8 hrs (at work / at school /at business)
  • 8 hrs (sleep)
  • 1 – 2 hrs (commute to work)
  • 1 hr (Dinner, Breakfast, lunch)
  • 1 hr Rest room activities all day long
  • 2 hrs (Miscellaneous activities / Family time )

As  you see whatever life style you are leading, 22 hours are now gone.  From remaining 2 hours, if you take 50% out, which is 1 hour. Dedicate just  this 1 hour completely for yourself. And when I say for yourself,  for  your inner self. No social websites, No internet, No cell phone use, No  Television. Cut out all these and just dedicate this 1 hour completely  for your inner self. Here is what you can do:

  1. Read a book / article.
  2. Write your thoughts or blog about anything you are interested in. I strongly suggest to share your posts regularly with like-minded people or communities as you write new ones to get healthy feedback and at the same time recieve new information. This further would give you a boost to progress towards healthy writing.
  3. If you have any hobby start working on personal home projects.
  4. Write personal journal (just something which indicates your daily experiences, dreams , life goals, ideas – no matter how small they are write it down)
  5. Get involved in some charitable work.
  6. Volunteer on any kind of activity online and offsite which might help anyone.
  7. Watch any documentary which is educational in nature.
  8. Do any kind of spiritual activity – Meditation, Yoga , Pranayama, Prayer etc.
  9. Just sit & Relax and introspect about your life.
  10. Do any physical activity – Exercise, Cardio, Play indoor/outdoor sport (not video games)

Most  important thing is that you do this just for yourself without any  expectations. Amazing things can come out with just this 1 hour of total  conscious efforts which you have not imagined prior. Hidden attributes  can come out, Never seen talents can come out from you. All because of  spending just 1 hour of your day's time. What you are doing here is  going deep inside yourself to see what's inside. And once you find it,  you bring it out and spend 1 hr of conscious efforts on it without any  expectations. Leave it to the destiny on what it might become in future.
